About Flags of Remembrance 2024 Monument
The Flags of Remembrance Project began in 2015 at Sandusky Junior/Senior High School, reviving a 1985 initiative to honor Veterans and a new initiative to instill community service in our students' hearts. Initially displaying 114 flags, the project now recognizes over 550 Veterans with ties to Sanilac County. The immense growth shows the community's support towards our veterans.
With this massive growth has come limitations on capacity. The students of Sandusky Junior/Senior High School, local Sanilac County Veterans, Sanilac County Commissioners, and the Sanilac County Community Foundation have been exploring ways to continue displaying this beautiful flag display while still maintaining reasonable storage and maintenance of materials to recognize our Veterans. The agreed-upon solution is a permanent monument to display our Sanilac County Veterans' names year-round with flag displays on certain holidays.
The new monument will consist of four black granite panels on the Sanilac County Courthouse grounds, featuring the names of honored Veterans. This monument will include space for approximately 400 additional names, totaling 950 names. This display will become a staple exhibit for Sanilac County, offering a consistent and expandable gathering place.
The current temporary in-ground plaques will be available to the families that purchased them to take home. The Veteran's name associated with the in-ground plaque will automatically be added to the new monument.
